Vocational Training

The basis for starting out on a successful career is a good apprenticeship. Have you finished school, maybe studied for a while, and are now in search of attractive career prospects? Then we have quite a lot to offer you – especially if you’re into modern technology, research, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Researchers from 60 different countries work with us. Together, we develop tomorrow’s methods, technologies and products – e.g. in health care, communications, sensing and environmental protection. Research always means teamwork. As an apprentice, you will be a member of the team, helping to secure achievements in science.

Thanks to the extensive and diverse training they receive, our fully fledged apprentices are highly employable – whether in research institutions and universities or in trade and industry. And we’re also rather proud of the fact that the Chamber of Industry and Commerce awarded our Joint Administration and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) the “Excellent quality of training” label recently.

We look forward to receiving your application!

Locations

Questions we are often asked …

How much will I earn during my apprenticeship?

Concerning this, we comply with the Collective Agreement for Apprentices in the Public Sector (TVAöD), which isn’t bad ;-). Your contact person at the institute will be able to tell you how much that is at present.

Is there an allowance for specialist books, etc.?

Yes, every September we will pay you a €50 allowance for learning materials.

Are there any other “extras”?

Absolutely! We (and the TVAöD) are very generous in this respect. Capital-forming payments, an annual special payment, occupational pension provision – the whole works! And if you manage to complete your apprenticeship, the TVAöD will give you a completion bonus ;-).

Will I be given learning support?

Definitely! Your trainer will be at your side throughout your apprenticeship to make sure you achieve your learning objectives. This support includes exercises that you will go through together; some institutes also offer external training or English courses.

What are my hours of work?

You will work 39 hours a week, usually spread over five working days.

What about vacation leave?

You will be entitled to 30 days’ vacation each calendar year. You will also have five days leave to prepare for your final examinations.

I already have children. How can I manage to complete my apprenticeship at FVB nonetheless?

Great importance is attached to family-friendliness at the Forschungsverbund. Under certain conditions, apprenticeships can be undertaken part-time. By the way, most of our institutes have an audit workandfamily (audit berufundfamilie) certificate.

Can I shorten the length of my apprenticeship?

If apprentices perform well and certain conditions are met, the length of the apprenticeship may be shortened by six or even twelve months.

Will apprentices be taken on after completing the program?

This does happen, but we cannot promise anything. However, most institutes offer the possibility of gaining six to twelve months’ work experience after completing the apprenticeship.

Can I apply to FVB if I want to change apprenticeships or drop out of university?

Yes, of course! It’s always worth submitting a (speculative) application.

How can I apply to FVB?

Paper applications are a thing of the past. Simply apply online. To do this, visit our website and find the vacancy that interests you. You’ll find more details there.

What should I include in my application?

We’re “old school” in this respect :-). The usual covering letter, Curriculum Vitae and certificates.

The Education Network High Technology Berlin

Research into future technologies results in lots of new products in our everyday lives, such as LED lamps and increasingly sophisticated smartphones. Those seeking to develop tomorrow’s cutting-edge products need young talents. After all, virtually nothing can be achieved without qualified professionals in high-tech production. And yet it is far from easy to find such talents, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). Although young people use latest product developments every day, they are often unaware of the job profiles behind such innovations.

This is where the Education Network High Technology Berlin (ANH Berlin) comes in. This network, based at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH), is financed by federal state, federal government and EU funds. The objective: to attract young high-tech enthusiasts and promote dual apprenticeships in the region.

More Info about the Education Network High Technology

ANH Berlin provides advice to companies and research institutes in all matters regarding vocational education and training; it also initiates partnerships for cooperative apprenticeships and supports applicants to find the right job. In addition, ANH Berlin provides vocational orientation to high school students, teachers and parents, as well as to Employment Agency careers officers. Since it was established in 2007, the network has grown steadily, establishing reliable contacts and pooling essential competences.
