The FMP conducts basic research in molecular pharmacology with the aim to identify novel bioactive molecules and to characterize their interactions with their biological targets in cells or organisms. Such compounds are employed as tools in basic biomedical research and provide starting points for developing novel drugs and strategies for the treatment, prevention, or diagnosis of disease.

Research Program

To this aim FMP researchers study at the molecular level key biological processes and corresponding diseases, such as cancer, aging including osteoporosis, or neurodegeneration. FMP scientists use and develop sophisticated technologies that range from nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy via high-resolution light and electron microscopy for the observation of cells and tissues to mass spectrometric analytical procedures and to high-throughput active substance screens among tens of thousands of compounds.

Research at the FMP is characterized by a highly interdisciplinary approach: biologists, chemists, pharmacologists, and physicists combine efforts to address molecular pharmacological problems.
